We LOVE a new book in our house and we had the pleasure of reviewing a fantastically new children’s book by the ever so talented author Michaela Alexander called ‘Miles & Mia A to Z’. Michaela is the mother of real life brother and sister Miles and Mia, whom her first book is based on. This isn’t any old A to Z book…this is a journey the siblings have been on and inspired by their adventures in and around London but with influences from their Carribean and British heritage.
Miles and Mia expressed to their mum that they hadn’t seen many books with characters that ‘look like them’, and so with the help of illustrator Sarah Croker, the duo have pulled off an illustrative and educationally diverse children’s picture book.
Forget ‘A is for Apple’, ‘A’ is for Afro! What a great start to the book! ‘AFRO is hair that’s natural and fluffy. Mia loves to wear hers big and puffy.’ My niece and nephew are mixed race and I’m yet to show them this book, but I know my niece is going to be utterly impressed with this first page alone, because she has an Afro (unlike her brother). Having grown up with a brother who’s hair is totally different to hers, my niece Isabella has not always been too sure about her hair. When she started nursery, it became apparent to her that her hair was different from her friends. She has since grown to love her afro, but how refreshing and current it is for children to read about children that look like you!
Every letter of the alphabet represents a new and unique event/ feeling/ object or experience, almost as though you are living a world through Miles and Mia themselves. The colourful illustrations and unique captions make for fun reading with the kids. Stanley and I have read it over and over and took it along to his toddler group to share with his friends.
With it being Michaela’s first published book, we are very excited to follow Miles and Mia on their adventures further. This is a beautiful light hearted alphabet book which highlights every young child’s imaginative and playful nature…exactly as it should be.
