Big Fish Little Fish… Never did I think that one day I would be taking my kids to a drum and bass rave and throwing shapes under the disco lights. I thought my hardcore clubbing days were long behind me, until I discovered Big Fish Little Fish, ingenious family rave’s, themed events for the whole family to enjoy.
When Harry was little, he was never a big fan of loud music, he would be the child that clung on to my leg at kids’ parties, and shy away from crowds of people. Even now, he’s not a big ‘showman’ among people doesn’t know. Stanley on the other hand is different. He loves a party, he loves to be a social butterfly, goes wild at big events and generally copes quite well in unfamiliar territory.
My sister-in-law and I took Stan and my nephew Milo along to a BFLF event at Selfridges just before Christmas. Once we got out of the lift on the floor we needed, straight away you could hear the thumping of the bass. Both Eloise and I looked at each other and thought ‘wow, it’s loud!’ We headed to the theatre in the department store and entered into this large shimmery dark party room: walls covered in streaming foil curtains, disco balls reflecting the coloured lights, lasers, glow sticks, balloons and a pimping music system to make any DJ envious! This really was a rave!
We parked up the pushchairs in a designated ‘buggy room’ and embarked on our first clubbing experience with the babes in arms! To my surprise, Stanley was not fazed AT ALL by the volume of music. We’re talking loud enough that you can’t hear each other speak unless you’re talking directly into the persons’ ear! Unluckily for Eloise, she arrived with a headache, so this was only going to cause her more discomfort. Milo coped for all of 45mins which was amazing considering he’s only 7 months old.
Alongside the dance floor was a large table set up for arts and crafts. Lots of pom-poms, cut out shapes, stickers and decaupage ready for us to make our own mini lanterns. Dad’s holding their littles on their laps getting into the creative mood while mums were knee deep in arty enthusiasm…most enjoying more than the kids. Me included!
For the mini crawlers and the babies almost sitting up, a fenced off play pen kept them contained and entertained with some soft play toys. This is where Eloise and Milo plotted whilst watching Stanley run laps around the dance floor chasing balloons and hiding under the giant parachute! The adrenaline at this point was about to reach fever pitch as Santa Clause entered the room accompanied by his elf. Wearing head to toe red sequins, he was a shiny surprise for both children and adults!
I recently wrote a blog (here) about going to Camp Bestival this summer and I have it under good authority that BFLF will also be there so we will have another opportunity to rave with them and experience some more clubbing hysterior! Maybe Harry will get involved too and have a dance-off with Stanley?! Now that is something not to be missed!!
