This year’s Den Day for Save the Children is between 29th May- 6th June. However what with Harry’s birthday being on 28th May we thought we would coincide this event with his ‘big day’ and get some of his friends and cousins involved!
This event is a week where children all over the country are getting sponsored to build dens with their families and friends and sleep in them overnight. Who doesn’t love to build a den? This is a regular activity in our house, except usually gets made then torn down about an hour later- due to lack of space and loss of interest!
They don’t necessarily have to be indoors either, they can be in your garden or school. The money that is raised goes to helping children in poor countries who don’t have anywhere safe to sleep at night. The funds go toward supplying things like tarpaulin, tents, sheets etc so that families in disaster struck countries can re-build their lives creating safe shelters for themselves.
We applied for our Den Pack and it arrived with a couple of informative booklets, a ‘make your own’ sign and flag, a wonderful checklist and the all important sponsorship forms, although it is also possible to create an online fundraising link too.
Harry turned 6years old this week, so on the eve of his birthday he had a friend and a couple of cousins come over to build his den in the living room. A friend of mine leant us a den frame (yes, these exist!) from the nursery she works at (it’s half term…so it’s fine), so you could say we kind of cheated a little…eeeeek! But in all seriousness, this frame was fantastic. Using large sheets and pieces of fabric, the kids pegged them to the frame and positioned fairy lights and snug sofa cushions inside for optimum comfort.
Then they had a little bed picnic and did some T-shirt designing followed by popcorn and a movie before tucking in to catch some zzzzzz! Harry had a super night and totally loved sleeping in his den. It’s such a fantastic idea and for such an awesome cause.
